Financial Support

Students who complete a study period within the framework of Erasmus+ receive an Erasmus+ grant in addition to the waiver of tuition fees abroad. This is a partial grant to cover the additional costs due to the stay abroad.  The Erasmus+ grant is paid exclusively by the International Relations Department.

Erasmus+ Grant

The Erasmus+ period of stay is composed of a part with financial grant and a part without financial grant (Zero Grant funding). The specific duration of the financial grant or the zero grant funding is determined by Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS) for each academic year based on the Erasmus+ budget available for PLUS. For the academic year 2022/23, the financially supported period is at least 3 months.

·         Erasmus+ grant amounts 2022/23.

Program countries are divided into three country groups as defined in the European Commission’s Program Guide. The current grant amounts can be found in the E+ grant amounts..

  • ·Prerequisite for payment of the E+ grant: Creditability as a meaningful supplement (voluntary internships) or with sufficient ECTS at the FB (mandatory internships)
  • Recognition as compulsory or voluntary internship at FB required > for compulsory internships: Crediting of at least 3 ECTS/supporting month necessary
  • Extent equivalent to full-time studies: full-time internship with 35-38.5h/week (incl. preparation and follow-up time for language assistants)

The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two installments: 70% at the beginning of the stay and 30% after the stay. The payment will be made on the actual days on site at the traineeship.

Please note that the payment of the 2nd installment of the Erasmus+ grant will be made only after the recognition certificate and the confirmation of stay have been checked.

Explanation Zero Grant:

  • Erasmus stay without financial grant while maintaining Erasmus status (e.g. tuition waiver)
  • The difference between the actual duration of the stay (mobility phase) and the financially supported duration of the stay (Erasmus grant period) is called the zero grant period:
    • counts as part of the general Erasmus mobility period
    • counts towards the total available Erasmus grant period of 12 (or 24) months per study phase
    • must be covered by ECTS (3 ECTS/month)
    • Example: E+ stay abroad planned for 5 months (= mobility phase), 4 months of which are funded by PLUS according to E+ guidelines (= Erasmus funding period) and 1 month zero grant (= zero grant period)> entire mobility phase recorded as Erasmus stay> evidence must be provided for entire mobility phase (= 5 months): Confirmation of stay; ECTS certificates (at least 3 ECTS/month recognized at the PLUS)

Recipients of study grants

Recipients of study grants can also apply to the Scholarship Office for a study abroad grant (“Auslandsbeihilfe”). Simultaneous receipt of study abroad grant and Erasmus+ grant for the same stay is allowed since the academic year 2019/20. Here you can find information about the amount of the study abroad grant as well as the travel grant.

Please note that as a recipient of a study abroad grant, you must submit a transcript of records to the Scholarship Office after completing your stay abroad (again, the minimum requirement of 3 ECTS per month of stay applies), otherwise you will have to repay the entire study abroad grant. The study grant (“Inlandsbeihilfe”) itself is not affected by this.

Tuition fees

During your Erasmus+ stay you are exempt from tuition fees at the University of Salzburg (and at the host university, if applicable).

Attention: During your stay abroad you have to pay the ÖH-fee in due time (!) – otherwise you will be exmatriculated! Some host universities charge Erasmus+ Incomings amounts similar to the ÖH fee – you cannot be exempted from these fees.

A leave of absence at the University of Salzburg is not possible during a semester abroad. Students who study at several universities at the same time must in any case report the planned stay abroad to every other university if they want to maintain their admission.

The exemption from tuition fees is only valid for the period of the stay abroad. A stay abroad completed within this period does not lead to a later exemption from tuition fees.

An Erasmus+ stay abroad does not extend the number of tolerance semesters! After completion of the minimum period of study + 2 tolerance semesters, the tuition fee must be paid.

For recipients of the Austrian “Studienbeihilfe”, an extension of the tolerance semesters can be applied for under certain conditions and if announced in time. The contact person for this is the scholarship office

The receipt of family allowance, on the other hand, could possibly be extended by one semester due to an Erasmus+ stay. Please inquire directly at the tax office!

Financial Top-Ups

In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, other financial support (top-ups) can be applied for:

  • Green Travel: travel cost support for environmentally friendly travel.
  • Students with fewer opportunities: please note that this top-up can only be applied for once, even if you fall into more than one of the above groups:
    • Students with children in need of care who are taken to the study/internship site.
    • Students with disabilities, if this results in increased financial expenses during the stay abroad (compared to the stay in Austria)
    • Students with chronic illness, if this results in increased financial expenses during the stay abroad (compared to the stay in Austria).
  • Inclusion support: if the Top-Up for students with fewer opportunities is not sufficient, Erasmus+ participants with disabilities or chronic illness can apply for inclusion support instead.

For more information on the Top-Ups, please see the respective items.

Top-Up: Green Travel

Students who choose to travel to AND from their study/internship site in an environmentally friendly manner may apply for a one-time travel grant for green travel. This includes travel to and from the site by bus or train. The application process takes place as part of the E+ Scholarship application.

Top-Up: Students with child

If you are doing an Erasmus+ study visit/internship together with your child/children, you can apply for the Top-Up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application process takes place during the application for the E+ scholarship.

Top Up: Students with Disability or Chronic Illness

Students with a disability or chronic illness can apply for the Top-Up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application process takes place during the application for the E+ scholarship.

Inclusion Support

If the Top-Up is not sufficient for students with fewer opportunities, students with a disability or chronic illness can apply for inclusion support instead. This does not provide a lump sum, but is intended to cover the actual additional costs incurred due to the disability or chronic illness. Deadline for application: three months before the start of the stay.

Erasmus+ students who are not among the participants with lower opportunities defined in Austria, but who can still prove that they have a real need for additional financial support on a real cost basis. These individuals may not receive top-up, but may also apply for inclusion support. Note: There is no automatic right to the inclusion support, it is always a case-by-case assessment by the university as well as by OeAD as the national agency. We kindly ask you to consider this addition and also inform the students about it.
