Department of Art History
Surrounded by outstanding works of art and architecture, Salzburg offers the unique opportunity to study art history both theoretically and through direct observation. The city’s distinctive diversity — spanning from the early Middle Ages to the present day — is reflected in the research and teaching activities of our department.
Our courses cover a wide range of topics, including Italian, French, and Spanish painting and sculpture, urban planning and heritage conservation, as well as commercial music television and avant-garde performance art. Importantly, our focus extends beyond Europe and North America to include Latin America and East Asia. This broad thematic scope is matched by an equally diverse range of methodological approaches.
Another major advantage is the department’s size, which allows for individual support and close supervision of our students.
