Classical Rhetoric

In the classical sense, rhetoric encompasses the theory and practice of written and spoken speech. Its goal is to convince listeners or readers or to guide them in the direction intended by the speaker. Rhetoric is therefore the science of communicative influence between people, or “persuasion science”. Today, in addition to the spoken and written word, many other forms of communication can be observed. Modern rhetoric is therefore not limited to the text of a speech alone. It also examines other “texts,” such as images and music, and asks what is persuasive in these media as well. The dissemination and promotion of rhetorical skills is a key objective of Salzburg Rhetoric; it aims to provide students at the University of Salzburg with a solid foundation for acquiring and developing practical rhetorical skills. This not only gives them a decisive advantage on the job market, but also helps them make themselves heard during their studies: successful presentations and discussions contribute to success in their studies and professional life.
