Disciplines

In our department, Classics are grouped into four disciplines, which engage with antiquity in research, teaching and public outreach, covering a broad and comprehensive spectrum of questions and methods in Classics and providing a comprehensive approach to antiquity:

  • Ancient History and Mycenology primarily examine the historical, cultural-historical and anthropological aspects of antiquity and its Late Bronze Age Aegean predecessor cultures.
  • Classical Archaeology and Aegean Prehistory focuses on the material legacy of Aegean prehistory, Classical antiquity and the Middle Ages.
  • Classical Philology studies the texts of Greek and Roman antiquity using the tools of editorial and literary studies.
  • Classical Rhetoric analyses ancient rhetoric and introduces contemporary rhetorical practice
