Classical Archaeology and Aegean Prehistory
Classical Archaeology and Aegean Prehistory study the material remains, art and architecture, settlement history and resource management from the Aegean Bronze Age to Late antiquity with a foray into Medieval archaeology. To clarify questions of chronology and analyse material aspects of human culture, methods and approaches of the natural sciences are increasingly implemented, which fall under the generic term “archaeometry”. Research and teaching focus on the material remains of cultures from the Mediterranean region, i.e. Greek and neighbouring communities as well as Roman society and others within the Roman Empire. Architectural, art historical, genre-specific phenomena and technologies are examined based on monuments and material remains. Aegean Prehistory covers the Aegean from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, Classical Archaeology the Greek and Roman eras, and various stages of the Middle Ages.
Excavations in Kolonna on Aegina (Greece), in the province of Salzburg (inter alia Neumarkt-Pfongau, Thalheim-Wels) as well as courses in recording and documenting material remains focus on a practice-oriented education. Regular field and museum excursions serve to deepen theoretical foundations.
