Ancient History and Mycenology
Ancient history traditionally deals with the history of the Greek and Roman world and the neighbouring communities of the Mediterranean region from the 3rd century BC to Late antiquity. Although based in the Department of Classics, the subject of Ancient History benefits from a close collaboration with the Department of History at the University of Salzburg due to its thematic focus. This is reflected in the name of the department, both in Classical antiquity and in Aegean protohistory (Mycenology). Mycenology is dedicated to the study of Mycenaean texts, the so-called Linear B sources, that provide information about the economy, socio-political organisation and cultural structuring of Late Bronze Age, Mycenaean palatial societies. The core topics explored in Salzburg include above all economic and social history, culture and history of mentality, but also medical and military history. Students are taught the history of Greek and Roman antiquity in all its facets based on various ancient sources (literary texts, inscriptions, evidence from numismatics and papyrology).
