Classical Philology

The study of Classical Philology is devoted to the wide range of texts written in one of the two classical languages, Ancient Greek or Latin, i.e. literature from the 8th century B.C. to the end of antiquity and aspects of their aftermath up to modern times.
In Greek Studies, research focuses on philosophy and rhetoric, in Latin Studies on texts of the Silver Latin period (1st/2nd century AD) and those of Christian Late antiquity; the latter is the focus of the research group  CSEL. Aspects of the reception history of Classics up to the present day are also engaged with selectively. In the course of the programme, students acquire both a thorough knowledge of the language and the ability to understand Greek and Latin literature, considering the social, (culture-)historical, religious, etc. conditions of its production and applying literary studies questions.
