Focus
The supplementary study programme and specialisation programme provide students with scientifically grounded and application-oriented knowledge of interdisciplinary medieval and early modern research while introducing them to the approaches of Digital Humanities. The subject area covers medieval and early modern history, culture, art, literature, and language, along with their enduring influence and fascination up to the present day (be it in the form of art treasures, literary works, thought patterns, historical themes, or architectural monuments like castles). Digital approaches and the handling of data, tools, and best practices from the Digital Humanities are integral parts of these studies. They offer contemporary training that can be applied effectively in university and non-university research, archives, libraries, and museums.
Subject Area, Educational Goals, and Application-Oriented Competencies
The subject area includes the history, culture, religion, philosophy, languages, literatures, and arts of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The focus will be on processes of intercultural transfer, interliterary, interlinguistic, and linguistic-historical phenomena (e.g., between Latin and vernacular languages in the development of vernacular literatures), the media and material conditions of medieval and early modern art and culture production (e.g., interactions between text and image, manuscripts as multimedia artifacts, media-historical “revolutions” such as the transition from manuscript to print), the phenomenality, functionality, and semiotics of artworks (from paintings and sculptures to castles or cathedrals), as well as sociopolitical and sociocultural practices and forms of interaction (e.g., rituals, rituality). Methodologically and theoretically, comparative, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches will be emphasized, with a particular focus on approaches from the Digital Humanities.
The foundation for competent, scientifically-oriented engagement is laid in introductory courses on history and culture, Digital Humanities, specific working methods of historical, philological, and art historical disciplines in medieval and early modern research (source studies and source criticism, codicology, iconography), as well as on the languages and language stages in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period.
The supplementary study programme and specialisation programme equip students with competencies, including current work techniques from the Digital Humanities, which can be applied effectively and sustainably in university and non-university research institutions, the archival, library, and museum sectors, and other areas of cultural mediation (publishing and media).
