Focus
The supplementary study programme “Global Studies” focus on engaging with current questions of globalization and its ecological impacts, as well as political, social, cultural, and religious developments.
Target Group
The supplementary study programmes are designed for all students who wish to acquire knowledge and competencies related to globalization and develop an interdisciplinary perspective on the phenomena of a globalized world.
Structure & Requirements
Basic Module (12 ECTS)
For the Basic Module, courses totaling 12 ECTS points from the Global Studies course offerings must be completed. Courses from your own field of study may only be chosen if they are not part of the mandatory or elective subjects. An exception to this rule is courses from the cross-sectional module related to socio-ecological crises, which cannot be credited as free electives.
The following courses or courses from the following areas must be completed for the Basic Module:
- VO Introduction to Global Studies (3 ECTS)
- VU Global Challenges (4 ECTS)
- Elective courses from the Global Studies offerings* (5 ECTS)
Advanced Module (12 ECTS)
For the Advanced Module, additional courses totaling 12 ECTS points from the Global Studies course offerings* must be completed. Courses from your own field of study may only be chosen if they are not part of the mandatory or elective subjects. An exception to this rule is courses from the cross-sectional module related to socio-ecological crises, which cannot be credited as free electives.
Specialisation Module (12 ECTS)
For the Specialisation Module “Global Studies,” additional courses totaling 12 ECTS points from the Global Studies course offerings* must be completed. Courses from your own field of study may only be chosen if they are not part of the mandatory or elective subjects. An exception to this rule is courses from the cross-sectional module related to socio-ecological crises, which cannot be credited as free electives.
*Students in the Master’s program in Geography who are completing the specialisation programme “Geographies of Uneven Development – Economic and Social Geography” and choose the subject “Global Studies” in the elective module 855M25 will take other courses from the Global Studies offerings instead of “Introduction to Global Studies” and “Global Challenges” for the supplementary study programme / specialisation programme.
Course Registration
Registration for individual courses is done via PLUSonline.

Certificate
After successfully completing the courses listed above, the following certificates can be requested:
- Basic Module Global Studies. This will be issued after successful completion of the Basic Module totaling 12 ECTS points.
- Supplementary Study Programme Global Studies. This will be issued after successful completion of both the Basic and Advanced Modules, totaling 24 ECTS points.
- Specialisation Programme Global Studies. This will be issued after successful completion of the Basic, Advanced, and Specialisation Modules, totaling 36 ECTS points.
IMPORTANT: It is possible to include supplementary study programmes and specialisation programmes in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Diploma examination certificate (naming of free electives). Regulations can be found in your curriculum, or you may need to reach an agreement with the chair of your curriculum committee beforehand.
Requesting a Certificate
Once you have completed the required courses, submit the completed exam pass and the corresponding certificates to Christian Zeller (). After verifying the documents, the certificate will be issued by the ZFL – Flexible Learning on behalf of the Vice-Rectorate for Education and Student Experience and will be sent digitally to your university email address.
Issuing the certificate is no longer possible after graduation. Therefore, please make sure to apply for the certificate at least a few weeks before graduation.
If it is not possible to print the transcripts from PLUSonline, only submit the completed exam pass.
