German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language (DaF / DaZ)

Focus

Teaching German to groups of learners whose first language is not German is a significant potential career field in various institutional contexts both domestically and internationally, especially for students of German Studies. The supplementary study programme “German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language (DaF/DaZ)” prepare students for work in two closely related areas of action: on the one hand, students are trained to teach German as a second language in language education and support for adult migrants as well as for children and adolescents with German as a second language; on the other hand, they are also prepared for teaching German as a foreign language domestically or abroad. Furthermore, relevant qualifications are of great importance for future teachers in schools – not only in the subject of German – for professional practice, as the number of multilingual students in all types of schools continues to increase.

Target Group

 The supplementary study programme is designed for teacher education students as well as students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s programmes in philological disciplines.

Please note: Most of the required courses may also be completed and recognised within the compulsory or elective curriculum of German Studies degree programmes or teacher education programmes in German. Certificates can therefore only be issued to these students upon completion of their degree programme. Certificates can only be awarded if the required courses have been completed as free electives or as additional coursework outside the regular degree programme.

Structure & Requirements

Basic Module for German Studies Students (12 ECTS)

The following courses* totalling 12 ECTS credits must be completed:

• German as a Second Language in Research and Practice (3 ECTS)
• Grammar of Contemporary German (3 ECTS)
• Developing Language Competencies 1 (3 ECTS)
• Developing Language Competencies 2 (3 ECTS)

Advanced Module (12 ECTS)

Courses* totalling 12 ECTS credits must be completed from the following areas:

• Guided Teaching Practice in DaF/DaZ (4 ECTS)
• Advanced Methods and Didactics (2 ECTS)
• Acquisition and Teaching of DaF/DaZ (3 ECTS)
• Acquisition and Teaching of DaF/DaZ (3 ECTS)

Within the supplementary study programme, they must be replaced by alternative courses that meaningfully contribute to the programme’s learning outcomes and competence profile.}

Course Registration

Registration for individual courses is done via PLUSonline.

Note! For courses you take as part of the supplementary study programme, select “Free Registration” in PLUSonline (if the option is available) during course registration:

Certificate 

After successfully completing the above-mentioned courses, the following certificates can be requested:

• Elective Module German as a foreign language / German as a second language. This will be issued after successful completion of the required courses totaling 12 ECTS points.
• Supplementary Study Programme German as a foreign language / German as a second language: This will be issued after successful completion of one Basic Module and the Advanced Module “Practical Field and Learning Objectives DaF/DaZ” totaling 24 ECTS points.

IMPORTANT: If students wish to have the supplementary study programme recorded on their Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diploma examination certificate within the area of free electives, the regulations of the relevant curriculum must be observed. It is recommended to consult the chairperson of the responsible curriculum committee beforehand.

Requesting a Certificate

Once you have completed the required courses, submit the completed exam pass and the corresponding certificates to or . After verifying the documents, the certificate will be issued on behalf of the Vice-Rectorate for Education and Student Experience and will be sent digitally to your university email address.

Please note: Most of the required courses may also be completed and recognised within the compulsory or elective curriculum of German Studies degree programmes or teacher education programmes in German. Certificates can therefore only be issued to these students upon completion of their degree programme. Certificates can only be awarded if the required courses have been completed as free electives or as additional coursework outside the regular degree programme.

Issuing the certificate is no longer possible after graduation. Therefore, please make sure to apply for the certificate at least a few weeks before graduation. If it is not possible to print the transcripts from PLUSonline, only submit the completed exam pass.

Transitional Provision

Students who completed coursework for the supplementary study programme German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language (DaF/DaZ) under the regulation published in the Bulletin of 8 August 2016, No. 234, may continue to obtain certificates under those regulations until 30 September 2027.

The 2016 regulation will expire on 1 October 2027.
