Websites

The Online Editorial Team advises and supports editors across faculties, departments, research centres, administrative units and other University entities in the ongoing development of their web presence.

The University of Salzburg’s  Corporate Design (CD) is binding for all University institutions. To enable units that operate their websites on their own servers or outside the University’s content management system (CMS) to implement the University’s visual identity consistently, the Department of University Communications will provide a dedicated web style guide.

The style guide includes all key design elements, a selection of sample pages, and the navigation structure of the University of Salzburg’s online corporate design. It should be regarded as a living style guide, as the University’s CMS is continuously being developed and individual elements and functionalities may therefore be updated over time.

  • In which cases may I operate an external website associated with the University of Salzburg?

To ensure a consistent and recognisable public presence, the operation of externally hosted websites associated with the University of Salzburg is permitted only in exceptional circumstances. In most cases, externally hosted websites are also required to comply with the University’s Corporate Design (CD) guidelines. In addition, all websites must adhere to the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Externally hosted websites may be operated in the following cases, subject to approval by the Departments of Communications and Fundraising, IT Services, and Data Protection:

    1. Collaborative projects with other universities in which all partners participate on an equal footing and where the project therefore cannot be presented under the corporate design of a single institution. If the University of Salzburg acts as the lead institution, the project should generally be presented in accordance with the University’s  Corporate Design.
    2. Conferences or academic events organised by a scholarly or professional association in cooperation with a unit of the University of Salzburg. In such cases, the event website may be designed in line with the corporate identity of the respective association.

For technical support relating to the University’s CMS, please contact the IT Services team.

For enquiries regarding data protection, please contact the University’s Data Protection Officer.

  • Which Corporate Design guidelines apply to an externally hosted University of Salzburg website?

    Use of the University Logo:

    1. The University’s word-and-image mark (logo) must always be displayed on websites representing a unit of the University of Salzburg.
    2. The logo must always be positioned in the top left corner of the website. Specifications regarding minimum size and placement can be found in the Corporate Design guidelines.
    3. The University logo must not be altered in any way. The word mark and visual mark may not be used separately, except in the context of social media.
    4.  Further information on the University’s word-and-image mark is available via the Intranet (login required, in German).

    Independent Logos (Internal Secondary Logos):

    1. As a general principle, University units are not permitted to create or use their own logos (internal secondary logos). This includes all word marks and combined word-and-image marks.
    2. Exceptions, for example in the case of collaborative projects with equal external partners, are permitted only with the explicit approval of the Rectorate.
    3. The use of secondary logos is not permitted for faculties, University centres, institutes, research projects of any kind, degree programmes or teaching initiatives.

    Colours:

    1. Only colours that conform to the University of Salzburg  Corporate Design may be used. Websites should primarily be designed using the University’s primary green colour as defined in the Corporate Design Manual.
    2.  Further information on colours and colour specifications is available in the Intranet (login required).

    Typography:

    1. As with printed publications, websites of the University of Salzburg must use the University’s designated typefaces, Franklin Gothic and/or Cambria. The sans-serif typeface Franklin Gothic is particularly suitable for body text, while the serif typeface Cambria can be used to create visual emphasis in headings.
    2.  Further information on the University’s corporate fonts is available in the Intranet (login required).
  • What information regarding data protection and legal notices must be considered for externally hosted websites?

A website operated in the name of the University of Salzburg requires careful compliance with data protection and media law requirements, not least in view of potential liability issues. This serves to protect both the rights of website users and the University itself from legal risks.

Prior to publication, consultation with the University of Salzburg’s Data Protection Officer is strongly recommended. Particular attention should be paid to requirements relating to:

    • Legal notice (Imprint) obligations
    • Cookie settings and consent management
    • GDPR-compliant privacy policies and data processing practices

Ensuring compliance with these requirements is an essential prerequisite for the operation of externally hosted websites associated with the University of Salzburg.
