Topic/Title	Visibility by Night. Urban night photography in the megacity of Lagos

Abstract

This doctoral thesis examines contemporary night-time photography in the Nigerian metropolis of Lagos. As one of the largest cities on the African continent, it epitomises the continent’s urbanisation (which is often associated with negative connotations). Numerous artists take photographs at night and in the dark in Lagos, thereby giving space to motifs, situations and actions that are often invisible by day. They create a nuanced picture of the city by, for example, depicting night-time work, focusing on party culture, addressing infrastructure and providing a visual space for subcultures. The focus is on photographic series and the question of which narratives of the nocturnal city are both reflected and generated by the works.
