Abstract

This research project primarily addresses the question of why — and indeed, whether — musical subgenres exist at all. There are various perspectives and approaches in different media contexts, which will be collected, categorized, and examined in terms of their underlying conceptions of the genre. Subsequently, an attempt will be made to develop a unifying theory or method that understands a musical subgenre in terms of its adaptation process from conceptual or concrete source material.
