Bachelor study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE)
What is PPE?
‘PPE’ stands for “Philosophy, Politics and Economics”. It is an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree programme that is unique in Austria and started in Salzburg in autumn 2017.
The need for a PPE degree programme stems from the observation that the pressing issues facing our society – such as globalisation, climate change and inequality – increasingly require interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives. The PPE degree programme takes this requirement into account by not separating the disciplines involved – philosophy, political science and economics. Rather, they intertwine to form an interdisciplinary programme. The focus is on teaching methodological skills. This gives students on the PPE degree programme a combined qualification to approach problems fundamentally and analytically.
Why PPE?
The PPE degree programme offers a broad and methodologically sound education in the disciplines of philosophy, political science and economics. After completing the programme, students have many opportunities to deepen their interests and inclinations in specialised Master’s programmes (within and outside Salzburg): e.g. Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, Data Science or European Union Studies.
Thanks to their methodological training and their combined qualifications, graduates are in demand in (private and public) companies, international organisations or political parties and interest groups. A strongly research-orientated education also opens up opportunities for academic careers.
Why PPE in Salzburg?
The University of Salzburg represents a comprehensive university with 18,000 students and 2,800 employees. It has six faculties that maintain a close exchange in research and teaching – interdisciplinarity is a way of life in Salzburg!
The participating disciplines are well networked in the international research landscape, enjoy an excellent reputation and have jointly established the University of Salzburg as a first-class address in the international science scene in recent years. An excellent supervisory relationship and the often familiar and personal atmosphere in the departments distinguish Salzburg from the mass universities of the big cities. This guarantees a modern education at the interface of socially relevant issues.
Salzburg is also regularly voted one of the most attractive places to study in Europe. Studying in Salzburg means studying in a marvellous environment with exceptionally varied and attractive leisure and cultural activities.
