Call Requirements
The University of Salzburg is offering a Publication Award worth €15,000 to members of the university, thanks to Dieter Zwiauer’s generous bequest. This award is intended to honor high-ranking and internationally recognized academic publications by renowned academics at the university and to promote their further academic careers at the University of Salzburg.
Main features
SUBJECT AREAS: The focus will alternate each year between different organizational units of the University of Salzburg and is therefore aimed at the corresponding subject areas. This is accompanied by an equally alternating change in the respective target publication media.
The 2025 call for proposals is aimed at those organizational units of the University of Salzburg that cover the following subject areas (linked to the possible publication medium):

natural science, human medicine and technical sciences

YEAR of PUBLICATION: The basis for selecting the award is an original scientific publication that appeared within the three calender years preceding the call for entries (i.e., 2022, 2023, 2024).
Jury:
To ensure a subject-specific and objective assessment, a high-ranking and experienced external expert commission will be appointed as the jury to evaluate the applications.
Jury Members for the final procedure “Kurt Zopf Prize 2023/24” have been:
- Univ.-Prof. Dr. Melanie MALZAHN
- Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manfred MATZKA
- Hon.Prof. Dr. Lorenz MIKOLETZKY
Award Criteria:
- Reputation of the publication medium (publisher, journal, etc.) within the research discipline;
- Originality of the publication’s objectives (hypotheses, theories, models);
- Novelty and scientific significance of the results in the research discipline;
- Quality of the elaboration of the topic (methods, analyses, conclusions);
- Presentation of the content and form of the work;
- In the case of multiple authorship: contribution of the applicant to the publication (explanations can be provided, for example, in the application letter; maximum 2 pages);
- Publications that were predominantly produced in Salzburg will be given preference;
Prize money:
- The award may also be shared,
- The prize money may only be used to fund scientific activities within a period of two years.
- If the prize winner continues their scientific career outside the University of Salzburg, the prize money will not be paid out or cannot be continued to be paid out.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Member of the University of Salzburg with a “Habilitation” and a current employment contract;
- Original scientific publication within the three calendar years preceding the announcement of the award (i.e., 2022, 2023, 2024);
- The same publication may only be submitted once for the `Publication Award´;
- Only one work may be submitted;
- Any application for or receipt of an award from another institution for the same publication must be disclosed in all cases
Application Procedure:
Applications had to include the following documents (preferably in electronic form):
- Informal letter with contact information including physical and e-mail addresses and phone-numbers;
- A copy of the scientific publication;
- Abstract of the publication;
- Reviews or other evaluations of the publication, if available (including Information about possible close relationship (e.g. coauthor, same department affiliation));
General Regulations:
- All applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision;
- The `Publication Award´ will be presented during the “Night of Excellence”;

The jury’s decision is final. There is no legal recourse and no right to appeal;
