Abstract

On the Production of Statelessness

Among the global refugee population, millions of persons are stateless, i.e. they have no citizenship and, thus, only have limited access to rights. The aim of my empirical dissertation is to investigate the everyday decision-making processes and administrative practices in Austrian state-authorities regarding the identification of stateless persons. A grounded theory methodology with qualitative data collection methods and an ethnographic perspective provides in-depth insight into this previously unexplored field of research to get a better understanding of the specific practices of boundary drawing in the context of migration, flight, and statelessness.
