Abstract

Tourism and Urban Dynamics: Structural Effects of Emerging Tourism in New Orleans (Louisiana) and Innsbruck (Tyrol)
Innsbruck (Tyrol) and New Orleans (Louisiana) are interesting case studies for early tourism. Both cities have a history as hubs on important trade routes. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, they both had a thriving theatre and concert culture, though in rather different cultural variations. This dissertation project will discuss the changes in infrastructure and society due to tourism in rather different environments as well as the impact on people working in tourism and living in tourism influenced societies. The main research question is whether the local development of tourism and the impact on the local population can be explained (at least partially) in general concepts of structural (social and economic) history.
