Abstract
Media hold a remarkable potential to influence human perception, emotion, and behavior, thereby shaping both individual and societal dynamics. Film productions rank among the most powerful of these media forms. This dissertation examines, based on eight filmed musician biographies (biopics), whether measurable demand effects can be observed in the aftermath of their release — particularly in music reception (streaming figures) and book sales related to the portrayed artists. In addition, the study investigates whether sociotheoretical concepts such as cultural omnivorism and reinforcement mechanisms — including social proof and the Matthew effect — can be identified in this context. Methodologically, the dissertation combines quantitative time-series analyses of streaming and sales data with an online survey and subsequent statistical evaluation, aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of media influence and its societal impact.
