“SMART Biking” addresses spatial, temporal, and (landscape) planning aspects in mountain biking by using methods and applications from geoinformatics. As part of transdisciplinary research and research-led teaching, geographical issues are explored. These include the sustainable use of ecosystems and their services, the preservation of biodiversity in the planning and use of training facilities, as well as climate change and current weather forecasting. The project also focuses on athletic performance improvements for elite athletes. Sensors collect data from the bike and the athlete, providing the coaching team with near real-time insights into sections of the course or techniques that need improvement. Additionally, the initiative aims to counteract the increasing lack of physical activity among children and adolescents through targeted training. Knowledge transfer takes place during weekly club training sessions, training camps, and competitions. Practical knowledge is actively shared through joint field activities with landowners, club members, and students. Sustainable knowledge storage and access are ensured via a learning platform. This is implemented in collaboration with the Union Mountainbike Club Koppl, which serves as a mountain biking competence center in the state of Salzburg.
The joint implementation supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
(Good Health and Well-being)
(Quality Education)
(Gender Equality)
(Clean Water and Sanitation)
(Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
(Sustainable Cities and Communities)
(Responsible Consumption and Production)
(Climate Action)
(Life on Land)
(Partnerships for the Goals)
