Are you interested in studying languages? At the University of Salzburg’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, you can study German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Latin, Polish, Russian and Czech.

  • German at the Department of German Studies 

    In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in German Studies and a teacher education programme in German, the Department of German Studies offers master’s degree programmes in Literary and Cultural Studies and Linguistics. In cooperation with other departments, these programmes provide opportunities to specialise in comparative studies. You can also enrol in the supplementary programme German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language (DaF/DaZ). For further information, please visit the Department of German Studies website.

  • English at the Department of English and American Studies 

    The Department of English and American Studies offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in English, a teacher education programme in English, and master’s degree programmes in Literary and Cultural Studies and Linguistics. The latter are offered in cooperation with other departments and provide opportunities to specialise in comparative studies.   • French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish at the Department of Romance Studies 

    The department offers a wide range of degree programmes, including teacher education programmes in French, Italian and Spanish; a bachelor’s degree programme in Romance Studies; and master’s degree programmes in Literary and Cultural Studies and Linguistics. In cooperation with other departments, the latter programmes offer opportunities to specialise in comparative studies. A distinctive feature is the bachelor’s and master’s degree programme in Language, Business and Culture, which combines business studies with foreign-language and intercultural skills.   • Greek and Latin at the Department of Classics

    In addition to the teacher training programmes in Greek and Latin, the Department of Classics offers a bachelor’s and a master’s degree programme in Classics. Students can also enrol in the supplementary study programme in Rhetoric.   • Polish, Russian and Czech at the Department of Slavonic Studies 

    In addition to a teacher education programme in Russian, the Department of Slavonic Studies offers a bachelor’s degree programme in Slavonic Studies and master’s degree programmes in Literary and Cultural Studies and Linguistics. In cooperation with other departments, the latter programmes offer opportunities to specialise in comparative studies. Learning Languages

Language courses at the Language Centre

Would you like to learn a new language or brush up on your language skills? The Language Centre offers a wide range of language-learning opportunities for students and staff at the University of Salzburg and Mozarteum University Salzburg, as well as for other people interested in learning languages. More than 1,500 participants attend the Language Centre’s courses each year.

  • Language Courses in 12 Languages 

    The Language Centre at the University of Salzburg offers courses in the following twelve languages: Arabic, Chinese, German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Croatian, Swedish, Spanish and Russian. In addition, the Language Centre offers a range of specialised courses, including Academic German and Academic English, Business English, and the course Culture and Language: Austria and Beyond for learners of German. Further offerings include Intercultural communication – Competence, Adaptation and Integration for international students, language advising for all languages, and the plurilingual course Learning Romance Languages through networking. More detailed information about the course offerings is available here.

  • Tandem Programme 

    Each semester, the Language Centre arranges language-learning tandems for participants in its courses and members of staff at the University of Salzburg. A language-learning tandem is a partnership between two people with different first languages who wish to improve their skills in each other’s language. Tandem partners meet regularly and communicate in the languages they are learning, with a particular focus on spoken interaction. Each partner supports the other by providing feedback.   • Language Meetup

    The Language Meetup gives you the opportunity to practice your language skills, discover new languages and meet people who share your passion for languages. Whatever your current level of proficiency, you are welcome to join our meetups and take part in language exchanges in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Further information is available here. 

  • Supplementary study programme “Languages”

    The supplementary study programme Languages is open to students from all fields of study who wish to develop additional language skills or focus their elective studies on languages. Further information is available here.
