Abstract
In my doctoral thesis, I examine the singing and use of the voice by operetta stars during the period 1918–1945. Central to my research is the question of how singing styles developed within the context of the dynamics of performative and productive stage practices during a period marked by numerous upheavals. How might the singers’ use of their voices be described? Is there a discernible stylistic and/or technical distinction from ‘opera singing’? Can continuities, discontinuities and/or transformations in voice and singing be identified during this period? The answers to these questions not only yield important research findings in the fields of operetta and voice studies, but can also provide valuable insights for historically informed performance practice.
