Sonja Puntscher Riekmann is Research Fellow at the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies. Until her retirement in 2019, Sonja Puntscher Riekmann was Professor of Political Theory and European Politics at the University of Salzburg as well as academic director of the SCEUS. As academic director of SCEUS she was responsible for the Centre’s general research and dissemination strategy, the doctoral college financed by the Swiss Humer Foundation and the master programme European Union Studies. Also she was coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project EMUchoices titled “The Choice for Europe since Maastricht. Member States’ Preferences for Economic and Fiscal Integration”. She is full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, of the Board of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). She is vice-president of the European Forum Alpbach and a member of the High Level Group on Social Innovation of the Council of the EU. Sonja Puntscher Riekmann was founder of the Institute of European Integration Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and served as its director from 2002-2008. She taught at the Universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Florence. At Humboldt-University of Berlin she held the chair of Comparative Political Science in the academic year 2000/2001. She was member of the Executive Committee of the EU Network CONNEX financed by the 6th EU Framework programme and directed by Beate Kohler-Koch at the University of Mannheim. She has repeatedly served as reviewer and panel member in the ERC selection procedure of starting and consolidator grants as well as in the EU Framework programmes. She has served as vice-rector for international relations of the University of Salzburg from 2003-2011. Her research fields are European integration, European institutional development, parliamentarism, and theory of democracy, constitutionalism and legitimacy, on which she has authored and co-authored many publications.
