Julian Koptisch has been a research associate and doctoral candidate at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography since October 2025. He previously studied Sociology and Political Science in Frankfurt am Main and Göttingen. He has held research assistant positions in the research group Biotechnology, Nature and Society and at the Research Institute Social Cohesion in Frankfurt, as well as at the Professorship of Sociology and Sociological Theory in Göttingen.

His master’s thesis examined human–nature relations from the perspective of critical-dialectical and neomaterialist theory and in his dissertation he plans to investigate hydro-sociality—that is, the interrelation between water and societies—in the context of the present and future challenges of the climate crisis.

Research interests:

  • Societal relations to nature
  • Critical theories
  • Posthumanist theories, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and new materialisms
  • Qualitative and interpretive social research
