Erika Weinzierl Prize and Scholarship
The Erika Weinzierl Prize has been regularly awarded since 2002 for pioneering work in the field of women’s and gender studies at the University of Salzburg.
The prize and scholarship are named in honor of the grande dame of Austrian contemporary history, University Professor Erika Weinzierl. She contributed for many years to research and teaching at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg – at the time, as one of the first female professors in Austria. Erika Weinzierl passed away in Vienna on October 28, 2014. She remains a major role model for young female scholars and their academic pursuits. The awarding of the prize and scholarships helps to commemorate this remarkable personality.
The Erika Weinzierl Prize for final theses in the field of women’s and gender studies at the University of Salzburg is sponsored by the Department of Culture, Education and Knowledge of the City of Salzburg and the Department for Women, Diversity and Equal Opportunities of the State of Salzburg, and is endowed with EUR 3,000.
In addition, an Erika Weinzierl Scholarship is awarded for a scholarly work (dissertation) in the field of women’s and gender studies. This scholarship is also sponsored by the Department of Culture, Education and Knowledge of the City of Salzburg and is endowed with EUR 2,500.
The prizewinner and scholarship recipient are selected by a jury composed of gender researchers and representatives from the sponsoring institutions. The chair of the jury and the administrative responsibilities for the Erika Weinzierl Prize lie with the University Professorship for “Politics & Gender, Diversity & Equality” at the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg – Prof. Zoe Lefkofridi.
